St. Michael Students Win Writing Awards
Ten St. Michael students accepted writing awards May 2 at a Meredith College celebration of young authors. The writers’ stories and poems appear in Surfing the Waves to Literacy, the Raleigh-Wake Reading Council’s 2010 publication. Seventh-grader Mary Amos received the additional honor of having her illustration chosen for the book’s cover.

Mardi Gras Parade
The third annual St. Michael School Mardi Gras Parade was held on Friday, February 12th and according to Judy Okamoto, the main organizer, “It just keeps getting bigger each year!  Next year we’ll be bigger than Macy’s.”

A Time To Celebrate Catholic Schools
For St. Michael School, the week of January 31st to February 5th was a time of celebration.  School children, teachers and administrators alike shared in the festivities of "Catholic Schools Week," (CSW) an annual event that focuses attention on the important role of Catholic elementary and secondary schools in providing values-centered education.  In discussing the week's theme of "dividends for life," Principal Dr. Sarah Wannemuehler stated that, "we are reminded of the rewards and growth we will receive not only in our education, but also in our faith."

Fantastic Turnout for Jolly Elf Trail 2009
Jolly Elf Trail Run brought out many running enthusiasts to Bond Park on December 12th to brave the cold and enjoy a race with its record breaking turnout of over 700 registered runners, many volunteers, cheering fans, and family.

Jolly Elf Trail Run at Bond Park on December 12, 2009
Come and enjoy the Jolly Elf Trail Run on Saturday, December 12th at Cary’s Bond Park, hosted by Saint Michael School.  As part of the Second Empire GRAND PRIX series, the Jolly Elf Trail Run includes a competitive 5K Run, a One Mile Fun Run, and a Kids' 200 Yard Dash.

International Thespian Society Chartered at St. Michael School
St Michael School is excited to incorporate the Thespian Society into their drama department this year. This program was created in 1929 by the Educational Theatre Association with the goal to honor student achievement in the arts.

Cross Country has taken afoot at Saint Michael School
Cross Country, a new extracurricular club for Saint Michael School’s middle school students in grades 6 through 8, kicked-off it’s first season with two of the 8th graders,   C.S. Scott and Savannah Lips, winning first place finishes in the boys' and girls' races.

Gauthier Receives Teacher of the Year Award
Dr. Wannemuehler announced that the 2009 Teacher of the Year, based on teacher votes, is Mr. Paul Gauthier.  Mr. Gauthier is an 8th grade homeroom teacher, teaches 7th and 8th grade Social Studies, and teaches 8th grade Church History.

Both second graders and fourth graders recently held an all-day Read-In.  Students brought blankets, pillows, stuffed animals – whatever would fit into their backpacks – and got comfortable reading their books throughout the school day!

St. Michael Student Attends World Leadership Forum
Andreane R., an 8th grader at St. Michael School, recently returned from Washington, DC where she attended a People to People World Leadership Forum. She was nominated by her 8th grade Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Rudiger, to take part in the week-long program with delegates from around the United States and beyond.

Local Teacher Publishes Bilingual Book
Saint Michael School Spanish teacher Karen Dries recently published a bilingual book for children.  The book is an ABC adventure with animals both big and small.  Cardinal Gibbons student and St. Michael graduate Christina Macdonald provided the colorful illustrations that bring the adorable animals to life.

St Michael first fielded the Varsity and JV lacrosse teams during the 2007-2008 spring season.  The boys teams play a challenging schedule against private club teams, public schools, private schools, and the other Catholic schools in the area.

Hope Inspires the Mini-Relay for Life

The Saint Michael School Mini-Relay for Life on April 22 was a very special event for the entire school and parish community. The students walked for six hours in 30-minute rotations in order to pray for loved ones and especially honor one of their fellow St. Michael classmates who lost her battle with leukemia in August.

Four St. Michael School students were honored on Sunday, March 29th at Meredith College for the 2009 Young Authors Celebration sponsored by the Raleigh-Wake Council of the North Carolina Reading Association.  The students wrote essays and poems with the theme “Bridges.”

Science Olympiad Team Excels in Competition
33 students competed in the Regional Science Olympiad Competition, which had 1200 students from 61 schools. The students competed in various science events, and in those events 24 student teams placed in the Top Five.
